Inclusive Fitness Takes Off at Bangor Aurora with Mae Murray Foundation

May 19, 2025 | News

We’re excited to share the success of Get Active 2025, a six-week inclusive exercise programme developed by the Mae Murray Foundation and hosted at Bangor Aurora Leisure Complex.

Funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, the initiative aims to break down barriers disabled individuals face in accessing physical activity, particularly in gyms. Many people feel excluded due to a lack of accessible equipment, facilities, and confident instructors.

Get Active 2025 addressed these challenges by offering personalised workout plans and gym inductions, helping participants build confidence and improve both their physical and mental well-being.

Will Carson, Sports Development and Health Manager for Northern Community Leisure Trust, said:

“We’re incredibly proud of the programme’s success and look forward to continuing our partnership with Mae Murray Foundation to create more inclusive spaces.”

Pauline, project lead from the Mae Murray Foundation, added:

“It’s wonderful to see people of all abilities getting active together and finding a pathway into local gyms.”

For participants like Christine, the programme was life-changing. Despite having a sight impairment, Christine had avoided exercise classes, fearing they would be too difficult. After completing the gym sessions, she shared:

“These sessions have been fantastic! I’ve improved my fitness, made new friends, and gained the confidence to use Aurora’s facilities on my own.”

Thanks to the programme’s success, we’ll continue offering inclusive sessions every Thursday at Bangor Aurora.
