How to Stay Active in Winter

Nov 01, 2024 | Blog
As we get further towards winter, the darker nights and colder weather can make it harder to stay motivated when it comes to exercise. To help you, we’ve put together some simple tips on how to stay active when it’s cold and dark outside.

Adjust your workout schedule

Less daylight hours can make it harder to fit in a workout around your schedule. You could try exercising at a different time of day or, if all else fails, do something active during daylight hours by going for a walk or run on your lunch break.

Or why not mix things up and try a workout class after work to add some variety? You’ll meet new people and workout in a brighter, warmer environment – which is more appealing all round!

Schedule in your workouts

Plan your fitness routine for specific days and schedule your workouts in your diary like you would appointments. At this time of year, it is tempting to feel like you want to hibernate under a snuggly blanket watching Netflix. But by planning in your workout sessions you’ll be able to achieve a balance between keeping active, and enjoying your cosy evenings binge-watching a series.

Make it a social activity

If you usually exercise on your own, why not team up with a friend or family member? The extra company can help you to find motivation and inspiration. This pushes you to work harder, achieve results quicker and have fun while doing it. What’s more, if you are a member, you can refer a friend and you’ll BOTH get a month’s membership FREE! If you exercise outdoors then joining a running club, or getting together with a friend will make it safer if you are worried about exercising alone after dark.

Create a motivational playlist

What better way is there to put a swing in your step than listening to your favourite music? Music turns on areas in our brain that are tied to our emotions, which is why listening to music can have a profound effect on our mood and motivation.

Whether that’s pop, rock, country, or an epic film soundtrack, it is a sure-fire way to elevate your winter fitness motivation.

Workout at your local leisure centre

If the thought of exercising in the rain and cold is unappealing, you could try our fantastic leisure facilities.

It will also help you to interact with like-minded people, who love to work out and are committed to a healthy lifestyle, just like you.
